Why should we introduce children to STEM subjects?

¿Por qué debemos introducir a los niños en materias STEM?

What and how do the little ones learn? Do you really think that's what they should learn? If the answer is no, you may be right, and that is that 65% of boys and girls who go to primary school today will end up working in professions that, even today, still do not exist. In this sense, we face a global challenge: to give our children, nephews and grandchildren the necessary future skills to adapt to the new times.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics make up the acronym for the word STEM. All of them are disciplines that will continue to gain strength in the coming years. The STEM educational approach proposes to develop hard and soft skills needed by 21st century individuals. But why is it so important to combine the learning of these skills? And why start with STEM at an early age?

Well, the so-called STEM approach is based on the idea of educating children in these  disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)  through an interdisciplinary and applied approach.

That is, with STEM the four 'subjects' are taught in an integrated way, seeking the development of skills and a direct application in the real world. According to some published reports on this new educational trend, in the medium/long-term future, this type of training will create new jobs for the youth of tomorrow.

Whether you are in education or have children and are just starting to discover STEM,  You will soon realize how much you need to broaden your educational vision.

Sometimes some experts talk about STEM or STEAM. This added 'A' refers to 'art' and assumes that the method also works on this discipline. Whether or not it includes art, this type of teaching encourages observation in children, the skills acquired and, in addition, allows children to be guided towards a technological assimilation that is highly demanded by today's society, a path that they have already begun to travel and that It will allow them to face the jobs of the future.

“One of the objectives of STEAM education is to arouse interest in these areas from a young age so that, once they grow up, they can more easily enter the market. that is 'hungry' for 21st century skills”, explains Oriana Circelli, CEO of WoWplay.

What are the benefits of the STEAM approach?

As we have already told you before, the adoption and learning of STEAM skills is directly related to the professional prospects of the occupations of the future. There is a clear year-over-year increase in the number of STEAM jobs available.  One of the main objectives of this new educational approach is the acquisition of mastery of technological tools. This will allow the individual to join a competitive and specialized labor market, having assimilated this knowledge since childhood.

In addition, the STEM philosophy encourages its students to get used to working in teams, making joint decisions  and to carry out collaborations and make hypotheses. Likewise, this educational system is capable of increasing creativity when solving problems, improving individual critical thinking, improving self-esteem and boosting communication skills.

As you can see, the STEAM educational approach has benefits at any age. But why is it better to start from a young age? We tell you!

STEAM for kids

Why should they start learning about this educational approach during childhood?

As children go through their key phase of development, between the ages of 1 and 5, WoWplay recommends that as soon as STEM concepts can be understood, these should be introduced accordingly. This has been promoted regularly within schools around the world as 4-5 year olds are starting STEM learning in different forms, whether it be entry level programming or just guided play around building and inventions: this adds to the learning journey and implementation of these skills.

The WoWplay subscription offers a number of fantastic tools and resources for  expose children from an early age to STEAM concepts and guided play. Some WoWplay benefits are:

  • The practice of "pretend play" at an early age offers a positive relationship with the impact of vocabulary skills of a child, and Harvard Medical School published findings that this type of imaginative play "develops the structure of a child's mind and brain."
  • Learning STEM subjects and coding, in particular, enhances the development of complex problem solving and creativity.
  • Improves long-term retention of concepts.
  • Imagination is also increased and the 'intimidating' feeling of new technologies is minimized.

STEAM or Montessori? Which one is better for my child?

Surely, when you start reading this post you have wondered what differences exist between STEAM and Montessori. Well, STEAM is not an "alternative" methodology and it is not outside traditional education, in fact it seeks to stay within it. STEAM simply aims to develop a global vision of the world instead of compartmentalizing it by subjects, thus helping to learn in a more real environment and more similar to the world outside of school. STEAM seeks to present several visions to the child so that he can deepen according to his interests and have the opportunity to discover what he really likes. In addition, the goal of STEAM projects is usually to solve a problem in order to contribute something to the community. But if you still have doubts, don't worry, we'll tell you everything you need to know about the differences between STEAM and the Montessori learning in this post.
